Vaniqa (eflornithine)

Vaniqa® (eflornithine HCl) Cream is a prescription-only medication applied to the skin to reduce the growth of unwanted facial hair. It is prescribed most commonly for women who are bothered by unwanted facial hair, and may be used in combination with other hair removal treatments, such as laser hair removal.

The benefits of using Vaniqa can usually be seen in about 8 weeks. In clinical studies, the longer Vaniqa was used, the better the results.

Vaniqa doesn't remove the hair like "hair removal" products. Instead, it slows down the growth of hair from the hair follicle. Vaniqa works during the growth stage of the hair cycle by blocking an enzyme in the hair follicle that is necessary for hair to grow. This makes it particularly useful as a supplement to other hair removal techniques.

Vaniqa is safe to use on all skin types (dry, oily, pale and dark).

How to Use Vaniqa

Use Vaniqa after cleansing and before applying moisturizer, sunscreen or cosmetics. Apply a thin layer of Vaniqa on the affected area of your face twice a day, until it's absorbed into your skin.

You may want to use Vaniqa once in the morning and once at night as part of your daily skin care routine, since you should wait 8 hours between applications, and at least 4 hours before washing your face again. Remember, you should continue to use your current method of hair removal.

Vaniqa does not work instantly and it takes time for results to become visible, but you should see improvement in as early as eight weeks. Using Vaniqa doesn't mean you don't have to deal with unwanted facial hair anymore.

Vaniqa complements your current method of hair removal by reducing the rate of hair growth, so over time you should be removing unwanted facial hair less frequently.

If you don't apply Vaniqa for an extended period of time, hair will begin growing at the same rate as it used to grow. Once you resume using Vaniqa twice a day, everyday, hair growth should slow again.

Side Effects

In clinical trials, some women reported mild and temporary skin irritations such as redness, stinging, burning, tingling, acne or rash. Only 2% of women discontinued their participation in studies due to side effects related to Vaniqa.

If you experience any of the above symptoms for an extended period of time while using Vaniqa, discontinue use and consult your doctor.

Important Safety Information

If no improvement is seen after 6 months of use, Vaniqa should be discontinued. The most frequent adverse events related to treatment with Vaniqa were mild and skin related. Please see full prescribing information for Vaniqa (PDF).
