Tazorac (tazarotene)

Tazorac® (tazarotene) is a topical medication (applied to the skin) that is prescribed for the treatment of acne and the treatment of psoriasis.

Tazarotene, the active ingredient of Tazorac®, is a topical retinoid. Topical retinoids are a category of medicine derived from vitamin A that have been shown to be effective in the treatment of acne, psoriasis, aging skin and other skin conditions.

When used to treat acne, Tazorac slows the production of oil (sebum) by the sebaceous glands and help prevent the pores from becoming clogged.

When used to treat psoriasis, Tazorac slows the growth fo skin cells. It is normal for psoriasis plaques to become very red before clearing when using Tazorac. The redness is often intense in color, but it is generally not painful.

Tazorac® is available as Gel or Cream.

How to Use Tazorac®

Use Tazorac® exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Tazorac® is usually recommended for use once a day, prior to going to bed at night,

  • Wash your face with warm, not hot, water and a mild cleanser.
  • Apply moisturizer before using Tazorac® to minimize drying and irritation by restoring the skin's protective barrier.
  • Spread one pea-size drop of Tazorac® over your entire face. Using more will not make your skin better faster and could cause irritation.
  • Protect your skin. Always use sunscreen and cover your face in cold, windy weather.

Contact you doctor if you have any concerns during your treatment with Tazorac®.

Side Effects

Irritation, redness, and peeling skin are common side effects that may result from using Tazorac®. Your acne lesions should start to health after 4 weeks of use. During the first few weeks of treatment, even when the medicine is working, it may appear that your acne lesions are getting worse. After that, you should start to see improvement. Be patient and stay on treatment as recommended.
