Rosacea is a chronic relapsing skin disorder that can be effectively controlled by following the rosacea treatment recommended by your doctor and eliminating triggers that aggravate your rosacea.
Rosacea triggers vary from person to person. It may take time to determine what triggers your rosacea flares.
The rosacea diary provides a way to follow your rosacea symptoms and document factors that may cause them to worsen. Use the diary at the end of each day for at least 2 weeks, or for several days during a rosacea flare.
According to the National Rosacea Society, more than 90% of people with rosacea reported that their rosacea improved after avoiding their personal triggers.
Some common triggers of rosacea include:
- Sun exposure – 81%
- Emotional stress – 79%
- Hot weather – 75%
- Wind – 57%
- Heavy exercise – 56%
- Alcohol consumption – 52%
- Hot baths – 51%
- Spicy foods – 45%
- Humidity – 44%
- Indoor heat – 41%
- Certain skin care products – 41%
It is also important to track your use of rosacea medications. Some rosacea medications, such as topical metronidazole (MetroGel®), topical azelaic acid (Azelex®, Finacea®) or oral doxycycline (Oracea®), are prescribed for many months to keep rosacea under control.
Taking your rosacea medications as prescribed is one of the most important steps you can take for keeping your rosacea under control.
