Lipoma

A lipoma is a painless, fatty mass in the deep layers of the skin. It is benign and causes no other health problems. The skin above a lipoma is normal.

Lipomas are very common and vary in size. They arise most often on the upper body and arms, but they can occur anywhere on the body where fat tissue is found.

The cause of lipomas is unknown, but it appears that some people inherit the tendency to develop lipomas. Some people develop lipomas in areas of injury or trauma.

No treatment is recommended unless the lipoma becomes a cosmetic concern, becomes tender, or bleeds from friction against clothing. Treatment options include liposuction and surgical removal.
