Face-lift
This surgical procedure tightens the skin over the lower part of the face and neck by cutting out excess skin and sometimes fat. A mid-face-lift may be performed less commonly to tighten sagging skin in the central portion of the face. Both procedures leave scars and require a healing phase that can range from a few weeks for a minimally invasive face-lift to several weeks for a full face-lift.
Filler
(see Dermal Filler)
Fitzpatrick type
A scale used to measure the darkness of skin. Fitzpatrick type I describes someone who is pale, with very little skin pigment, who easily sunburns. Fitzpatrick type IV describes someone who is dark with a lot of skin pigment who easily tans when exposed to sunlight.
Folliculitis
The inflammation of one or more hair follicles, usually due to an infection by staph. bacteria.
Fractional lasers
This class of lasers, which includes the Fraxel, Fractional C02, Active FX, and Profractional, rejuvenates the skin by resurfacing only a fraction of the skin with each treatment, leaving the surrounding areas intact for faster healing and fewer side effects.
Frown Lines
(see Glabellar Creases)
Furunculosis
Also known as boils, this is a type of skin infection that results in abscesses developing within several adjacent hair follicles and surrounding tissue.
