Sunburns, Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Spring is around the corner and most people are eager to get outside. Just as when the temps are well below freezing we don mittens to protect from the cold, we must take the same care to protect ourselves from the sun. The sting of a sunburn lingers long after the redness fades...
Consider these facts from the Skin Cancer Foundation: One or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than double a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. And at any age, more than 5 sunburns doubles the risk for melanoma.
Regular checkups with a dermatology specialist are important to detecting skin cancer early. Some other things to consider if you are at a higher risk:
- If you have freckles, light skin, hair or eye color
- If you have a family/personal history of skin cancer
- If you have had chronic exposure to sun, a lot of sunburns early in life
- If you have a large number of moles
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime.
One American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 61 minutes).
Don't wait... Make your appointment to see a dermatology specialist by calling our office 270-685-5777. Early detection is the key to treatment! Click on this link to listen to our archived radio shows where Dr. Michael Crowe, one of our board certified dermatologists discusses treatments for Pre-Cancer and Cancer.
