Nerve Conduction Testing
The Nerve Conduction Test (NCV) is a brief, relatively painless test of the nerves in your arms and/or legs. A very small shock is given to the nerves to assess how well they are functioning. It is very similar to the shock you get from static electricity. The test generally takes less than 30 minutes.
Some patients require an EMG. In this test a small needle is placed briefly in the muscles to look for any damage. No shocks are given for this part of the test.
Many patients hear "horror stories" about how bad the test is. 99% of them are amazed at how easy the test was once they are finished with it.
Of course, the entire staff will do everything they can to make you comfortable during the testing.
You need no special preparation prior to the test. We ask that you don't apply lotions to the part of the body we will be testing as the lotion may interfere with the electrical impulses. You may resume your normal activities after the testing.
If you are taking any type of blood thinners, let us know before the test, although they usually don't cause any problems. If you have a history if hepatitis or HIV, also let us know so we can use extra precautions.
