Prior to Visit for IPL Photofacial
Photofacial treatments with the Palomar 500 IPL or the Isolaz "painless Laser" is actually one of the greatest and most beneficial treatments we do. Fantastic for sundamaged and unevenly pigmented skin and works great for fine wrinkles! Here's some basics you need to know when coming in for and having a Photofacial IPL done:
Pre Treatment
Discontinue use of Retin-A and Glycolic Acid for 1 week before treatment. Discontinue aspirin and NSAIDS (motrin, advil, naprosyn, etc) for 2 weeks before your treatment. If you get cold sores let Doc or Kim know so we can put you on an anti-viral agent like Valtrex 500mg twice a day beginning the day before your treatment as the Laser/IPL treatment can trigger cold sore outbreaks in those at risk (it is light energy you know!) Eating extra pineapple the week before any procedure tends to decrease brusing.
Post Treatment
Application of cool cloths, ice packs, cool gels immediately following the treatment can help alleviate post treatment discomfort and the mild stinging that may occur. Mild edema (swelling) is to be expected immediately following the treatment and generally resolves in 1-2 days but may persist for 3-5 days. Sleeping with your head elevated may help reduce this swelling. You may experience significant bronzing or redness in the treatment area for 1-3 days after the treatment. This may persist in a mild form for several weeks. Gentle cleansing and use of non-irritating cosmetics is permitted after treatment. The use of retinoids or glycolic acids should be avoided during the treatment and recovery period. Avoid waxing, bleaching or chemical peels during the course of treatment. During the first 2 weeks after treatment, new skin will begin to form and it is essential to avoid injury and sun exposure during that time. You should use sun screen with a SPF of 30 or higher whenever you are outside for up to 6 months post treatment to get the absolute best effect. Our PCA anti-aging kits are great post treatment and amoung the many benefits of the PCA kit an appropriate sun block is included and will serve the protective purpose in this case-ask Doc about ourPCA skin treatment options! Once the treatment area has initially healed, some mild itching or dryness may occur. This will gradually clear. The use of non-irritating moisturizers (like those in our PCA products) may provide relief for this minor problem.
Avoid picking at or scratching the treated skin to achieve your best results. If any crusting occurs wash daily and apply an antibiotic cream until we get a chance to check it. You might also consider trying Aloe Vera or Desitin cream to the area as an alternative to or with the antibiotic cream. Makeup may be used after the treatment area has quit swelling.
And above all else-enjoy the compliments you get from your friends and neighbors about how great your skin looks!
