Prior to Visit for Laser Hair Removal
Hair Removal Information
Prior to your visit.
Please avoid waxing, plucking hairs, electrolysis or other forms of hair destruction. You may shave up to 3 days prior to your visit. If you plan to have a large area like your back done and plan to shave it would be nice if you could bring in a digital picture or a poloroid picture of the area as it was before you shaved it for our records. We often will take pictures for our records before any procedure. Please avoid unprotected sun tanning for 3 weeks prior to your visit. More importantly you must avoid prolonged sun exposure for 2 weeks after your treatment. During this 2 week period you should use sun screen of at least SPF 30 on the treated area. These sun screens can be purchased at your office visit if you desire. You may use tylenol or advil one hour before your treatment to help control any pain you might experience with the procedure. Avoid the use of specific creams, deodorants, perfumes, etc. on areas to be treated.
Initial Visit
You will be seen by Doc Bill and a history and exam will be completed. Information about the procedure will be provided to you and all your questions will be addressed at that time. You will complete a consent form which allows the procedure to be completed and acknowledges that you understand the risks and benefits of the offered procedure. During the visit, the procedure might be completed but if you have a large area to be done we may suggest a small area be tested first to determine your sensitivity to the light energy and the procedure may be scheduled at another time. This is done for safety sake as we want to be as sure as possible we avoid overtreatment with the laser at all cost.
What to Expect
Immediately after the treatment a mild sunburn-like sensation, occasionally with some minor swelling will be present. This may last up to 24 hours and can be treated with ice packs or cold gel. Treated hairs will remain for 7-30 days after your treatment. This is not growing hair-the hair is being expelled outward from your skin. Keep in mind that at any given time your hair has some various stages of developement and not all hairs will be treated by only one treatment-only the actively growing hairs are destroyed. Multiple treatments are normally required to achieve the best results. Even under the best of conditions, it is expected that you will have between 75-90% success with hair reduction after your series of procedures are completed. Until redness is resolved it is recommended that you avoid applying cosmetics to the treated area, swimming, hot tubes and Jacuzzis, activities that cause excessive perspiration, sun exposure (wear sun block!) or aggressive scrubbing and the use of exfoliants to the treated area. Bathe as usual-treated areas may be more temperature sensitive though. Do not pick at any scabs that may develope. You may notice some itching in the treated areas. Please call our office for any blistering, crusting, swelling or infection as we would not expect any of that post procedure with our cautious techniques. As always if you have any questions or concerns post procedure please call Doc.
Keep follow up appointments as scheduled because if you want the best results the procedure must be repeated at a specific time interval to allow the hair follicles that were sleeping at the first treatment to awaken and be actively growing so they are more susceptible to the laser energy at the next treatment.
