Health Education Index
Norman Minars, M.D., Todd Minars, M.D., Lesley Clark-Loeser, M.D., and the staff of Minars Dermatology have provided a health education resource for its patients and the Hollywood, Florida community. We hope you find the skin care information here to be helpful.
Acne – Acne ("zits," "pimples") is a common skin condition affecting our teenage and adult patients. Drs. Minars and Clark-Loeser offer a review of acne skin care, acne myths, acne and diet, acne medications (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide), acne scars, and other acne treatments, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT).
Actinic keratoses – Actinic keratoses, also referred to as "AKs," are a common pre-cancerous skin condition caused by excessive sun exposure. The Library offers reviews of AKs and the various treatments available, including cryotherapy and topical medications.
Aging Skin – Our skin changes as we age. There are now many new and innovative anti-aging treatments available that provide a more youthful appearance. Norman Minars, M.D., Todd Minars, M.D., and Lesley Clark-Loeser, M.D. provide reviews of several cosmetic procedures, including medications (tretinoin, Latisse), botulinum toxin (Botox), dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvederm), and laser and light treatments, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
Atopic Dermatitis– Visit the National Eczema Association for information regarding dermatitis management and support groups.
Botox for hyperhidrosis – Uncontrollable sweating is embarrassing, but it is common and it is TREATABLE. I am constantly amazed at two things - how many people suffer needlessly because they are not aware of available treatments, and how grateful patients are after their condition has been cured.
Laser Hair Removal – The laser targets a specific color. The brown or black hair heats up and is vaporized while the surrounding white skin remains untouched. Does this mean that we cannot remove hair from black skin? Actually, we can.
Microdermabrasion – You may have heard friends talk about having a "Parisian Peel," "Smart Peel," "Power Peel," "Ultra Peel," or "lunchtime peel"– all are types of Microdermabrasion, another tool Minars Dermatology has to revitalize and resurface skin.
Psoriasis – Norman Minars, M.D., Todd Minars, M.D., and Lesley Clark-Loeser, M.D. offer reviews of the different types of this chronic skin disorder (plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, and scalp psoriasis) and the psoriasis treatment options that are available, including corticosteroids, vitamin D derivatives, retinoids, phototherapy (PUVA), cyclosporine, and new biologic treatment options. Visit the National Psoriasis Foundation regarding psoriasis management and support groups.
Rosacea – Rosacea is a common but poorly understood disorder of the facial skin that causes redness and an acne-like rash. Norman Minars, M.D., Todd Minars, M.D., and Lesley Clark-Loeser, M.D. review the different types of rosacea, tips for keeping rosacea under control, and rosacea treatment options, including topical metronidazole, oral antibiotics (doxycycline), and laser and light treatments.
Skin Cancer – 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetimes. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two major forms of "non-melanoma" skin cancer. The Library reviews skin cancer types and skin cancer treatment options, including medications (Aldara, 5-FU), excision, and Mohs Surgery. Visit the Skin Cancer Foundation for information regarding skin cancer prevention and support groups.
Sunscreens – The regular use of sunscreen is an important step to prevent sunburns, skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Drs. Minars and Clark-Loeser review practical sunscreen information, including SPF values, types of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB), sunscreen ingredients and tips on using sunscreen. Learn more about sunscreen.
The Library includes patient handouts and links to trusted health resources, such as the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
You may refer to the educational content here to better understand and manage your health. Please keep in mind that the information here is of general interest and may not apply to your specific medical diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.
