ANXILLARY HYPERHIDROSIS
Excessive sweating is a daily debilitating struggle that negatively affects everything from careers and education, to relationships and having fun. If you suffer from extremely sweaty underarms, hands, or feet, or from an excessively sweaty brow, you may think that no one understands. You may think that you’re alone. You’re not. Millions of people around the world suffer the effects of hyperhidrosis every day—just like you do.
Sarah Beaton, PA is Kenner Dermatology’s expert on ANXILLARY HYPERHIDROSIS and offers non-invasive treatment for anyone who suffers from this problem.
Axillary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating of the underarm. In many cases it is accompanied by palmar hyperhidrosis or sweaty palms. Excessive armpit sweating is associated with over activity of the sympathetic nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. Excessive sweating may occur with or without stress or anxiety.
Problems with axillary hyperhidrosis are mostly social ones. The mechanism of sweating is involuntary and is not under one’s self control.
Medical deodorants can be very effective in treating axillary hyperhidrosis. BOTOX™ or surgical resections of the the sweat glands have also been used to treat medication-resistant sweating.
Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is injected into the skin to treat hyperhidrosis and acts by temporarily blocking neurotransmitters that stimulate sweat production. A decrease in sweating is noted in approximately 1 week and may help the condition for 4 to 12 months. BOTOX™ acts by temporally blocking neurotransmitters that stimulate sweat production. Botox works well for axillary hyperhidrosis. It is injected at 15-20 sites in the underarm. A decrease in sweating is noted after the injections. However repeat treatments are needed every 4-6 months.
