What is an Obstetrician / Gynecologist?

An obstetrician / gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the health of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina, and ovaries) and the diagnosis and treatment of women's health issues, such as cancer, incontinence, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhoea, infertility, menorrhagia, and infections.

Professional Obstetrics / Gynecological Organizations

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States. The ABOG examines and certifies nearly 1,700 obstetrician-gynecologists and subspecialists in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology/infertility and gynecologic oncology each year. Additionally, more than 18,000 physicians are examined annually for the purpose of maintenance of certification.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has over 52,000 members and is the nation's leading group of professionals providing health care for women. The ACOG works primarily in four areas: serving as a strong advocate for quality health care for women; maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for its members; promoting patient education and stimulating patient understanding of and involvement in medical care; and increasing awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care.
