What is a Gastroenterologist?
A gastroenterologist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), of the gastrointestinal tract, also called the digestive tract. This organ system includes: the esophagus, liver, pancreas and biliary, small intestine and colon.
Professional Gastroenterology Organizations
The American Gastroenterological Association is the trusted voice of the gastroenterology (GI) community. Founded in 1897, the AGA has grown to include 17,000 members from around the globe who are involved in all aspects of the science, practice and advancement of gastroenterology. The AGA Institute administers the practice, research and educational programs of the organization.
The mission of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is to advance the medical treatment and scientific study of gastrointestinal disorders. The College will strive to serve the evolving needs of physicians in the delivery of high quality scientific, humanistic, clinical, ethical, and cost-effective health care to gastroenterology patients. More than 11,000 physicians from 82 countries are members of the ACG.
The North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) advances understanding of normal development, physiology and pathophysiology of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver in children, improve quality of care by fostering the dissemination of this knowledge through scientific meetings, professional and public education, and policy development, and serve as an effective voice for members and the profession. The membership of NASPGHAN consists of more than 1400 pediatric gastroenterologists.
Gastroenterology Specialties
Pediatric gastroenterologists specialize in gastroesophageal reflux (GER), peptic ulcers, H. pylori, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Hirschsprung’s disease, cyclic vomiting, polyps, gallstones, hepatitis, biliary atresia, jaundice, pancreatitis, lactose malabsorption, failure to thrive and other common and rare disorders. Most pediatric gastroenterologists perform endoscopy, colonoscopy, esophageal pH probe studies, esophageal and rectal manometry and liver biopsies.
Patient Advocacy and Research Organizations
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports basic and clinical research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields, as well as many basic science disciplines. NIDDK extramural research is organized into 4 divisions: Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases; and Extramural Activities.
