What is a Allergist?

An allergist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies, such as anaphylaxis, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and hay fever.

Professional Allergy Organizations

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology is a professional association of 5,500 allergists/immunologists and allied health professionals. Established in 1942, the College is dedicated to improving the quality of patient care in allergy and immunology through research, advocacy and professional and public education.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world.

Allergy Specialties

The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network's mission is to raise public awareness, to provide advocacy and education, and to advance research on behalf of all those affected by food allergies and anaphylaxis.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America provides practical information, community based services and support to people through a network of Regional Chapters, Educational Support Groups and other Local Partners around the U.S. AAFA develops health education, organizes state and national advocacy efforts and funds research to find better treatments and cures. In addition, the mission of AAFA's Web site is to provide online access to AAFA's reliable, validated asthma and allergy information and tools to families, patients, parents, healthcare providers, policymakers and others.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology is the largest professional medical organization in the United States devoted to the allergy/immunology specialty. The AAAAI represents, asthma specialists, clinical immunologists, allied health professionals and others with a special interest in the research and treatment of allergic disease. Established in 1943, the AAAAI has nearly 6,500 members in the United States, Canada and 60 other countries. The AAAAI is devoted to the advancement of the knowledge and practice of allergy, asthma and immunology for optimal patient care.

The National Eczema Association improves the health and quality of life for individuals with eczema through research, support, and education. The National Eczema Association is a national, patient-oriented organization, which is governed by a Board of directors and guided by a Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of physicians and scientists who donate their time and expertise.
